I need a vacation. Recently we took a vacation. Perhaps we should look into taking another.
In early June Fitz and I visited dear San Francisco – mostly to celebrate our friend Thadeus‘ 5th birthday.
Yes, that’s right. 5 is a very important age.
This post has nothing to do with Amber Lane… but everything to do with those people, places and things we hold near and dear to our hearts – the patterning of life that led us to Northampton, led us to this quirky carriage house, led us to working tirelessly for months on end to bring Curio to life. This is our backdrop. A small hiccup in time back to what inspired the present madness.
The night before we left:
Always too much to do!
On the way to SF, we had a date in NYC:
ABC Kitchen for a yummy meal of morrel mushrooms, grass fed bison burger, almond sorbet + almond cake. Heavenly.
And a sister… with a home for us to rest our weary heads.
Then to the Bay where we immediately felt right at home with our adopted family in San Mateo:
The best part of birthdays is the presents!
Thadeus with his new pop up book.
All the boys!
My first time meeting the newest member of the fam – Alekos!
He’s growing up so fast!!
Love these people. ❤
One of my infamous way-too-elaborate dinners for everyone. This one was a mushroom chicken soup. Mmmm!
The dinner table when not used for eating. Davy and Fitz spent most of the vacation glued to this station.
And it paid off!
My favorite shot of the boys:
“Boxes” … the best game in the world! Basically you strip down to the essentials for increased mobility and then throw and smash boxes around the room and at each other. Love this candid shot!
We also hung out with our other favorite family in SF, playing uncle and auntie to 2 more cute boys.
Zach tentatively tries out the water. I can relate.
He got the hang of it after awhile!
Attempting a picture.
Ah, there it is! Me – my nephew Zachary – my bro-in-law Steve…… another boy in orange.
Zach’s little brother, William. Looking quite sultry here.
When not engaged with adorable little Asian children, we did other favorite Emme + Fitz things:
My Maddie in rehearsal! So great to be back in the studio!
The first seeds of a new production, planted in typical ZiRu fashion – across 2 time zones, via Skype. I miss you Miche!
Backseat juice samples, Mission-style a la “Happy Moose Juice.” Thanks Ryan!
No walk through the Mission is complete without a super burrito from La Cumbre!
And, just to further tempt us for a move back to the Bay… 5 POUNDS OF BRUSSEL SPROUTS FOR $1! California, I miss you so.
But… you say… after looking through all these pictures… something is missing.
Whatever could it be?!
1. City of Saints. Adorable barista and a mod bar. East Village, NYC.
2. Culture. A multi-roaster excited about their new Nitro cold brew tap. Midtown, NYC.
A smattering of ideas brainstormed at Culture.
3. Melange. Inside ODC Theater, SF. One of my favorite lookin’ cafes of all times, right across from one of my favorite dance studios!
4. Samovar Tea Bar. The fanciest tea set up in the world (?!) with a pretty awesome science angle. Curio, anyone? Mission, SF.
5. A break for a macchiato at Linea Coffee. Mission, SF.
6. A peek into life at 4B. Speed dating a roastery! Mission, SF.
The infamous Hein and a behind-the-scense glimpse of one of my absolute favs. This place is quite dear to my heart – many a wonderful conversation with a friend over cappuccinos at their Parklet. So much inspiration for Curio blossumed here.
The colorful, blended child of Four Barrel – De La Paz!
7. Mug shots at Ritual, my old haunt!
Nothing beats a pour over in a Ritual mug. Mmmm!
What a trip, right? On the way, home we made a couple of detours – intentional… and otherwise:
Getting crazy from the vacation – a stop at Fitz’ parents’ place in PA.
Just in time for dinner. Delicious as always!
Another truckload in Frank, more goodies for Curio!
So we saw this on the way home.
And then this happened. … FORTUNATELY only 4 miles from my uncle’s home in CT. Of course, the engine is in the BACK of VWs… so all the antiques had to come OUT to fix the issue. Then the rain started….
Needless to say, we had to stay at Uncle Chris’ until the rain blew over.
Two days later!
But don’t worry. We got a dose of my favorite girl baby, Thea. Such a sweetheart!
… Finally. Home Sweet Home to a care package on our door step from my cousin Robbie. What a great welcome back present – little treats sent with love from South Carolina. Wow!
Clearly grits were in order for dinner that week. Eggplant and tomato stew over grits with fresh parsley. My northern take on this southern tradition!
What a vacation! Whew! … Now I sit here and dream of the next. 🙂
Livin’ the good life!
[Editor’s note: Not all pictures were taken on the same day. Don’t worry, we didn’t drink THAT much coffee in one go of it! We just only took 2 outfits! … And, even still, it felt luxurious. I mean there was running water for our ENTIRE trip! Every place we stayed! Amazing.]
